Whirlpool Refrigerator Problems and Error Codes

If your Whirlpool refrigerator is showing a code on the display, it is telling you which sensor or component has stopped reporting correctly. Most codes point at one part, and knowing which one turns a vague fault into a specific job.

The codes below cover the common Whirlpool refrigerator models, including French door, side by side and top freezer. Your exact display may vary by model year, so treat this as the direction to look in rather than a diagnosis in itself.

Worth saying at the start: a Whirlpool refrigerator not cooling does not always show a code at all. Some of the most common faults, a failed condenser fan or a frosted-over evaporator, produce no code whatsoever. The machine simply gets warmer.

Whirlpool refrigerator error codes and what they mean

CodeWhat it meansWhat usually causes it
PO or Power OutagePower was interrupted and the freezer warmed upNormal after an outage. Press and hold to clear
E0 or Cooling OffCooling has been switched off in the menuOften triggered accidentally. Turn cooling back on
ER or Sabbath modeDisplay and lights disabled deliberatelyHold the correct button pair to exit
1 or E1Freezer sensor faultFailed thermistor or a loose connector
2 or E2Refrigerator sensor faultFailed thermistor in the fresh food section
5 or E5Evaporator sensor faultSensor failure, often alongside frost buildup
6 or E6Communication fault between boardsWiring, or a failed main control board
9 or E9Ice maker faultIce maker module, or a frozen fill tube
dEF or Defrost faultDefrost cycle not completingDefrost heater, thermostat or control board
F1 to F9 rangeControl board reporting an internal faultUsually a board replacement

A code that clears when you cut power for five minutes and comes straight back is a real fault. A code that clears and does not return was probably caused by the power interruption itself.

Whirlpool refrigerator not cooling

This is the most common reason people call, and the code display is often blank.

Work through it in this order, because it goes from cheapest and most likely to most expensive and least likely.

Check the fresh food section is not just poorly loaded. Air needs to move around inside. A fridge packed solid against the rear vents will have warm spots regardless of whether anything is broken.

Listen for the condenser fan. It sits underneath or at the back, near the compressor. If the compressor is running and the fan is silent, the system cannot shed heat and the whole refrigerator drifts warm. This is a common failure and a straightforward repair.

Pull the kick plate off and look at the condenser coils. If they are packed with dust and pet hair, that alone can stop a refrigerator cooling properly. Vacuum them clean. This is genuinely worth doing once a year and almost nobody does it.

Look for frost on the back wall of the freezer. A thick sheet of ice behind the rear panel means the defrost system has stopped working. The evaporator ices over, air can no longer pass through it, and the refrigerator section warms up first while the freezer still seems fine. That pattern, freezer cold and fridge warm, is the classic sign.

Check the evaporator fan. Open the freezer and listen. If you hear nothing, and pressing the door switch does not start a fan, the fan motor may have failed or iced up.

If the compressor is silent and the refrigerator is completely dead, check the outlet with something else before assuming the worst.

Ice maker faults, which are their own category

Whirlpool ice makers fail in a small number of predictable ways.

SymptomLikely cause
No ice at all, arm is downFrozen fill tube, or failed water inlet valve
Hollow or small cubesLow water pressure, or a partly blocked filter
Ice tastes badWater filter overdue for replacement
Ice maker overflowsInlet valve stuck open, or fill level set too high
Ice clumps togetherDoor seal letting warm air in, or slow use

A water filter that has not been changed in over six months is behind more ice maker complaints than any actual component failure. It is the first thing to rule out and the cheapest.

Charlotte water is hard, which shortens filter life and puts scale through the water path faster than a manufacturer six month guideline assumes. If you are in Mecklenburg County and running a filter to the letter of the schedule, you may still be running it too long.

What you can safely check yourself

StepWhat to doTime
1Note the exact code shown, then power cycle for five minutes5 minutes
2Check the temperature settings have not been changed2 minutes
3Confirm cooling mode is switched on2 minutes
4Vacuum the condenser coils behind the kick plate20 minutes
5Listen for the condenser and evaporator fans5 minutes
6Look for frost on the freezer back wall2 minutes
7Replace the water filter if it is over six months old10 minutes

Stop there. Beyond this point you are removing the rear evaporator panel, testing sealed system pressures, or working on the control board, and none of those are homeowner jobs. The sealed refrigerant system in particular is not something to open without the right equipment and certification.

Stop immediately if you smell burning, see scorching around any connector, or find water pooling under the unit.

When it needs a technician

Call somebody if:

  • A code returns immediately after a power cycle
  • The refrigerator section is warm while the freezer stays cold
  • There is a sheet of frost behind the freezer rear panel
  • The compressor runs constantly and never cycles off
  • The compressor is silent and the outlet is fine
  • Any code in the F1 to F9 range appears

Most of these come down to a sensor, a fan motor, a defrost component or a control board, and all four are repairable. A refrigerator is one of the appliances where repair usually wins on cost, because the sealed system is normally the expensive part and it is normally the part that has not failed.

We test the specific component the code points to rather than replacing parts speculatively, and we quote before any work starts.

Frequently asked questions

How do I reset a Whirlpool refrigerator?
Unplug it or switch off the breaker for five minutes, then restore power. That clears transient codes. If a code returns straight away, it is reporting a genuine fault and resetting again will not help.

Is a Whirlpool refrigerator worth repairing?
Usually, yes. Fans, sensors, defrost heaters and control boards are all replaceable and the refrigerator itself is normally sound. Replacement makes more sense when the compressor or the sealed system has failed on an older unit.

Why is my Whirlpool fridge warm but the freezer still cold?
Almost always airflow. Either the evaporator has iced over and air cannot pass through it, or the fan that moves cold air between the two compartments has stopped. Both are repairable.

What does PO mean on a Whirlpool refrigerator?
Power Outage. It tells you the freezer rose above a safe temperature while the power was off. Press and hold the indicated button to clear it, then check whether anything in the freezer thawed and refroze.

How long should a Whirlpool refrigerator last?
Ten to fifteen years is the usual working range, and many go longer with the coils kept clean. Cleaning the condenser once a year is the single thing that most affects how long one lasts.

Do I need the model number before calling?
It helps a great deal. Whirlpool uses different boards and sensors across model years, and having the number means the technician is more likely to arrive with the right part on the van. It is usually on a sticker inside the fresh food compartment, along the wall or the ceiling.

Getting it fixed

If your refrigerator is showing a code that will not clear, or cooling unevenly with no code at all, the fault is nearly always one identifiable component rather than the whole machine.

AGA Appliance Service handles Whirlpool appliance repair and refrigerator repair across 29 cities in 7 counties in the Charlotte metro and northern South Carolina, including Charlotte itself. Our vans carry the common Whirlpool sensors, fan motors and defrost parts.

If it is your Whirlpool dishwasher rather than the refrigerator, our guide to Whirlpool dishwasher problems and error codes covers those codes separately. And if the ice maker is the only thing failing, that often comes down to the water supply rather than the refrigerator.

There is a $79 diagnostic fee, waived when you approve the repair, and every repair carries a 90-day parts and labor warranty. We are open 9 AM to 8 PM, seven days a week, and same-day service is available on bookings placed before 11 AM. Call (704) 904-2007 or book a visit online.
